As the world continues to become more digitized, the impact of technology has certainly been felt in education systems across the world. 

Many classrooms have been moving forward towards education centred around technology. A US finding by the National Centre For Education Statistics found that ninety-seven percent of schools had one or more instructional computers located in classrooms in 2008. Now fastforwarding to 2020, most schools in the US and countries far and wide around the globe complete part of or most of their work and study digitally on laptops and computers. In fact many schools are making it compulsory for students to own their own laptops and bring it to school everyday. Other schools provide students with the necessary laptops and computers to complete their study.

One key reason behind the surge in technology in education is the ease and convenience in which classwork can be distributed to students and completed by students all online on laptops or tablets. Apps like Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams are providing platforms for teachers to post classwork and assignments to students with ease, making it much more effortless for teachers than printing and distributing work and assignments on paper. Also, many companies like Google and Microsoft provide popular services like Google Drive and Microsoft Office which are allowing students to complete their classwork in the form of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and so on with ease.

Another key reason that suggests why technology has taken over education systems is that technology is becoming a key topic in many jobs around the world right now. As society becomes more centred around technology, many of the most in-demand jobs in the future will surround the topic of technology. Not only that, but now and in the future nearly all jobs will utilize technology. Many computers and screens are already used in most jobs. Another technology other than just screens from computers and tablets is robotic machines, which are predicted to be high in demand for jobs in the future. In fact, if we look at Linked in’s 2020 Emerging Jobs Report most of the top 10 emerging jobs are centred around technology. Take a look at the top 10 emerging jobs according to LinkedIn:

As you can see 7 of the top 10 emerging jobs according to LinkedIn are centred around technology. With many jobs becoming more and more digitized it means that the education system has to keep up. As the education system tries to keep up many new subjects have arisen in schools centred around technology. For example, topics like IT have become more and more common among schools around the world.

What does this mean for the future in education?

With more jobs becoming focused on technology and with technology becoming more prominent throughout our day to day lives, education systems will likely make students complete most of their work online on laptops, computers and tablets. Not only classwork and study will be completed online but also tests and assignments. One day it is likely that most exams and assignments will be marked by artificial intelligence. More topics and subjects in schools will arise in technology as well. We’ll have to wait and see when and how fast technology will impact education systems around the world.
