Cyberpunk 2077 was the most hyped game of 2020, if not one of the most anticipated games EVER. But unfortunately, Cyberpunk has not lived up to its hype, with its release being an absolute mess. From the lengthy delays to its very buggy gameplay, today we will be discussing all the latest developing news about the mess that CD Projekt Red has gotten into with its terrible release of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 roughly began development 9 years ago according to our estimations, but the first trailer came out in 2013, so it’s at least 7 years since the game started development. That’s at least 7 years of hard work from CD Projekt Red, but fastforwarding to now, their hard work has been shadowed by a really messy release.

Delays

Firstly, let’s start by talking about the delays. Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed by CDPR three times this year alone, and technically we should have all been playing it last spring, if the schedule stayed as it was supposed to. Cyberpunk 2077 was first delayed from April 16th, 2020 to September 17th, and then it was postponed to November 19th and now December 10th.

This means that Cyberpunk has been delayed a staggering 8 months since it was supposed to be released! Three lengthy delays left gamers and Cyberpunk fans in disappointment. CDPR blamed the delays partly to its multiplatform release — which will see the game launch across two generations of console hardware, PC, and Google Stadia. This point didn’t give fans a reason to stop complaining though, with some fans and gamers going to the extent of sending death threats to the developers of Cyberpunk 2077.

Senior game designer for Cyberpunk 2077, Andrzej Zawadzki, tweeted this,

“I want to address one thing in regards of the @CyberpunkGame delay. I understand you’re feeling angry, disappointed and want to voice your opinion about it. However, sending death threats to the developers is absolutely unacceptable and just wrong. We are people, just like you.”

Bugs and Performance Issues

Another issue with the game that is being much talked about is the amount of bugs in the game. It is hard to even play 30 minutes without encountering a bug or two. There are hundreds of clips surfacing online with hilarious but unacceptable bugs, for example, this guy randomly gets flung miles up into the sky before falling and landing to his death:

Or take a look at this bug, where the character’s bike seems to have had enough of him and drives off randomly into the distance:

And I’ll let you watch this one as well, where apparently the character’s car is a soda machine:

These are just some of the hundreds of bugs that you can encounter in Cyberpunk 2077. Bugs aren’t the only concern, but huge performance issues have occurred, especially in previous-gen consoles like the PS4 and the Xbox One. On base PS4, the game barely scrapes by at 720p and (at times) 15 frames-per-second. This is, honestly, entirely unacceptable. The game’s defenders will tell you that of course it runs poorly on such old hardware. But then why release it at all on such old hardware? This footage from PS4 is absolutely shocking, take a look at the replied tweet underneath:

This is leaving many fans complaining and is quite an embarrassment for CD Projekt Red. CDPR is a much-loved game developer, best known for its Witcher series, but these huge performance issues and bugs are a betrayal of gamer trust. Cyberpunk 2077 is currently getting destroyed on Metacritic user reviews, rocking a 2.7 on PS4 and a 3.5 on Xbox One. Now Sony has reportedly been offering Cyberpunk 2077 refunds For PS4 And PS5 users because of performance issues.

CD Projekt Red has now issued an apology on their website and the official Cyberpunk 2077 website for not paying more attention to the game’s performance on previous-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One. Here is what they had to say,

“We would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase. We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.”

CDPR also went on to say that they would,

“Fix bugs and crashes, and improve the overall experience. The first round of updates has just been released and the next one is coming within the next 7 days. Expect more, as we will update frequently whenever new improvements are ready.”

They also said that they would release two large patches in January and February.

CDPR interestingly stated that if you are not pleased with the game you can opt for refunds. Here is exactly what they said,

“If you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy. For copies purchased digitally, please use the refund system of PSN or Xbox respectively. For boxed versions, please first try to get a refund at the store where you bought the game. Should this not be possible, please contact us at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com and we will do our best to help you. Starting from today, you can contact us for a week up until December 21st, 2020.”

We’ll have to wait and see whether new updates and patches will do the trick for CDPR to fix up the game, but it’s terrible release has made one of the most-anticipated games become one of the all time flops.
