Oppo has announced its Oppo X 2021 phone, and it can transform from a 6.7-inch display to a 7.4-inch display, with a ROLLABLE display, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait. This mind-blowing new concept phone could be the best solution to delivering a big-screen experience in a package that still fits in a pocket, and is a huge rival to Samsung’s foldable phones. The Oppo X 2021 could be the best answer to transforming a phone to a tablet, with a press of a button! An advantage of this concept phone compared to Samsung’s foldable phones, is that there are no visible creases or folds evident on the screen’s display. Samsung’s foldable phones have had many issues regarding the foldable displays, like dust getting into the hinge and damaging the display or nicks and dings on the soft plastic which is used to help the phone fold eloquently.

You may have already had some doubts about there actually being a phone that can stretch its screen with a rollable display, but recent videos from the media give us some proof and evidence of how this phone works. Popular leaker Ice Universe sent videos of the Oppo X 2021 in action.

Now, how does this exactly work? Well, Oppo says that by using ‘dual motors’, it is able to unfurl the phone’s rollable display without putting excess pressure on specific points. Furthermore, to better support its rollable display and increase its durability, Oppo also created a backplate to improve the phone’s strength when stretched. The Oppo X 2021 also uses a frame-within-a-frame design that allows important components like the phone’s battery to stay in place without creating huge gaps for dirt or other detritus to get inside and damage the phone. Finally, to help protect that delicate rollable screen, Oppo says it created what it calls Warp Track, which is a durable laminate designed to increase the durability of the phone’s display.

Unfortunately though, we will have to wait for this phone to be released. How long? Time will tell, this statement just released by Oppo probably means we won’t see it come out any time soon, “Although there is no plan for its commercialization in the short term, it will serve as a guide for the transformation and evolution of future product form factors. Commercialization requires market research and business justification, and may take some time.” 

The Chinese company isn’t the only one working on rollable panels though – LG’s B Project is coming in March, a rollable phone that will use an LG Display panel. Let’s hope we can get an idea of how these rollable displays will turn out in the market soon!
